student assessment

primary

In Year 1 and Year 2 the grading system is not used at all. Parents will receive a clear indication of progress in literacy, numeracy and socialisation using written comments. This is based on the school's assertion that a secure and non-threatening environment is more important at this stage than high achievement motivation.

In Y3 the grading system is only used for the end of year report. By this point parents and students need to become familiar with what will follow in later years, but the Y1 and Y2 approach will be used through the year to that point.

From Y3 to Y6 English, Mathematics and Science are graded. Other subjects receive outline written comments on attitude and progress.

secondary

At Key Stage 3 (Y7 to Y9) all academic subjects are given levels which range from a level 1 through to a level 8.

A detailed explanation of expectations in Y7, 8 and 9, along with what is needed to achieve each of the levels at Key Stage 3 can be found in the KS3 section of the website.

Further information being found using the following link:www.curriculum.qca.org.uk. In addition, many of our teachers provide information on levels through handouts, e-mail home or inserts into students’ books.

Students in Year 10 and 11 take I/GCSE courses, which are examined, at the end of Year 11. The courses follow syllabi set out by either The University of Cambridge or Edexcel and assessment is against the criteria set by the respective examination board. Therefore grading in Year 10 and Year 11 is an indication of a student's expected performance in the terminal examination in Year 11.

It is graded internally using a 5 point scale: A* A B C D with an F indicating an unclassified or failing grade.

Students in Year 12 and 13 take the IB course which is examined externally at the end of Year 13. The course is assessed using IB Levels 1 – 7; with 7 being the highest and 1 the lowest.

Students at Warwick Academy will receive 5 reports a year. Two of these reports will be mid term reports, issued during the autumn and spring terms. A mid term report will provide an effort grade and an achievement grade for each subject taken by a student. A full report will consist of an effort grade and an achievement grade for each subject taken by a student along with either a verbal comment provided at a parent teacher conference or a written comment. At the end of the summer term every student will receive a full written report.
