Parents and Teachers Working Together

waa@warwickacad.bm

The Warwick Academy Parent Teacher Association (WAPTA) is an organization of parents, teachers, alumni, staff, relatives and interested parties with the common goal of encouraging, promoting and supporting efforts of the students and programs of the school.

WAPTA is a fund-raising committee that plays an instrumental role in providing supplies and educational support to Warwick Academy. Each year WAPTA raises funds to support a wide range of school initiatives. WAPTA has raised money for instructional technology, books, playground and gymnastic equipment and classroom enhancements for our children.

In addition to its fundraising undertakings, the WAPTA President has a seat on the school’s Board of Governors and represents the parents’ perspectives and concerns on school issues.

The Constitution of WAPTA describes in detail that the purposes and functions of the organization will be:

• To encourage and further communication and co-operation between home, school and alumni;
• To communicate to members information about the school;
• To consider matters that are of concern to the Board of Governors, the Principal, staff, students, parents or members of the Association
• To raise funds for special programmes, resources and projects and
• To promote, encourage and support efforts to maintain and further the education and well being of the students.

The Management of the Association is vested in an Executive Committee consisting of a President, two Vice Presidents, a Treasurer, a Secretary and an Assistant Secretary as well as six Members at Large, the Principal and the Head of the Primary Department of Warwick Academy as ex-officio members and at least two appointed teacher representatives.

Where are your WAPTA Fund-raising dollars going?

During the last school year (2010 - 2011), WAPTA generated a gross income of $182,166.  These funds will be used to fund staff development, the Dare to Care Program, wireless access in the school, tools for the Design and Technology department and many other necessities requested by the school.  We definitely cannot do this without your help!  Through your assistance, WAPTA has provided the school with Apple Mac computers, additional sunshades for the lunch area, sound system for assemblies, microphones for the Primary drama department and equipment for Physical Education.  In addition to these larger items, WAPTA also helped students attend the UN School Conference in New York, sponsored students on the Spirit of Bermuda and provided books for the Annual Prize Giving.  Each year WAPTA also sponsors the Graduation Reception and a year-end Teacher’s Lunch, plus much, much more!

Involvement in WAPTA is a very rewarding job.  We are comprised entirely of volunteer parents who meet once a month to primarily plan and organize fun social and fundraising events at the school.  The atmosphere is very positive and casual.  Mrs McCorkell and Mrs Woods along with several other staff members attend our meetings and update us on school news and upcoming plans at Warwick Academy.  We all dedicate a lot of time and effort to WAPTA and enjoy being part of the success of the school.

We would like to thank all of you who have attended our functions and supported us in any capacity.  Many of you have assisted by volunteering at the Christmas Fair, buying and selling raffle tickets, donating prizes and participating in our many endeavours to help raise money for the school.

If you would like to learn more about WAPTA and are interested in joining our team or one of the sub-committees for fundraising events, please e-mail Jennifer Frias (jfrias@platinumre.com) or Terry-Lynn Thompson (tthompso@gov.bm).
